Count Frontenac’s Lost Gold Coins

Many treasure hunters in Pennsylvania are well aware of Count Louis Frontenac and his lost gold coins. Supposedly, Frontenac had so many gold coins in his chests that hiking through Potter County was simply unbearable & made his team vulnerable to attack. Count Frontenac and his men buried the gold treasure, it is said, beneath a rock etched with a cross on it. Frontenac’s lost gold coins are still buried there.

The local indians knew well the location of this rock marking the gold treasure. The cross on it kept them at bay, though….they feared mysterious spirits indicated by the etched cross. The rock was north of Coudersport, and we believe we have further, more specific details which might help a treasure hunter locate this “sacred” rock in our Treasure Chest page. The debate rages on about whether the cross is visible to this day, or weather has smoothed the treasure marker beyond recognition. One thing is certainly true though - Count Frontenac’s lost gold coins are still waiting to be found…but you’re on your own in dealing with the “mysterious spirits” who guard it!
